The battle against the Italian lasted for five long sets ending up with a final scoreline of 6-7 (5), 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. This victory also marked the first time Tiafoe won a best-of-five match after trailing by two sets. Next, he will face Borna Coric in the second round. During the same time last year, Frances Tiafoe was enjoying a high point in his career. He entered the Top 10 for the first time in June 2023 after winning the Stuttgart Open. Along with that, he also became the third African-American man to hit this mark, drawing his name parallel to legends like Arthur Ashe and James Blake. However, this year brought several moments of setbacks for him. The ATP star has downgraded to the 29th ranking carrying a baggage of several setbacks. During his recent appearance at the Queen’s Club Championship 2024, he faced an early exit. This came after his first-round defeat to Australia’s Rinky Hijikata, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0.
